Hmm,

Four of the sites that skewed it towards female are TV network sites that I use just to test network connections. I never actually look at most of them otherwise, except for the Food Network which is one of the heaviest female sites of the bunch. The actual correct priors should be the gender ratio of people who visit this site, not just use the internet.

Also, the big thing I take away from this is that, for most people, the browser history doesn’t generally give enough information to determine gender, but it does rarely supply “conclusive” incorrect evidence.

For example, this widget currently indicates that I am 54% female, when I am in fact male.

Interesting. I’m 53% male. I’m actually 100% male so that’s reasonably good.

Perhaps it needs to be processed a bit further for better results. Say, round the ratios to the nearest quartile so only sites with a significant gender preference are counted. Because I visit Facebook doesn’t tell you anything about my gender in reality.

Maybe I missed it, Mike, but I’m curious about where the male:female ratios came from for all those websites. I didn’t see it on the Quantcast page you linked to… and even if it had been there, I’d wonder how they knew. I’ve never seen a site ask for gender, even when placing an order, and you can’t reliably guess it based on first names, so… how can the visitor gender ratio be known for all these sites?
